CAMERONis a proud Scottish surname that came into use as a first name after World War II.It is both a Highland and a Lowland name each with its own separate origin.
The Highland name is said to be a nickname derived from the Gaelic cam shrn meaning hooked nose and the Lowland name of a topynym from the parish of Camberone in county Fife. There is also a Cameron reservoir just south of St Andrews feeeding the Cameron Burn (creek) that runs into the North Sea east of the famous golf course.
Camberone or Camberon is a Barony about 20 kilometres north-east of Coutance in Normandy.
The name was taken north into Scotland by one of William's knights after the 1066 invasion.
A majority of early records, beginning in the early 13th century, were about southern people and show the name as Cambron or a spelling variation of it, which tends to indicate the authenciticity of the origin of the Lowland name. The origin of the Highland name cannot be dismissed, however, as there were a lot fewer written records of the Highland Clans kept in the south. (9)page 120.
