BYRNE, BYRNES, BIRN: Ir Ó Birn 'descendant of Biorn' (ON Bjorn) or Ó Broin 'descendant of Bran' (raven). (7)
BYRNE: Byrne and O'Byrne (both forms are in use) is one of the ten commonest surnames in Ireland, borne by about onepercent of the populatin of the Republic. The ancient territory of the O'Byrnes was in Co. Kildare but as the Anglo-Normans extended the Pale they were displaced and found a new home in the hills of southern Co. Wicklow with the sept centre at Ballinacor in the barony of Ballinacor South. Dublin and Co. Wicklow account for the largest number of Byrnes and O'Byrne today and there is still a substantial representation of the name in Ballinacor South barony, in and around Aughrim and Tinahely. (5)
