BRERETON
BRERETON is an English toponym from at least two places, in
Cheshire and Staffordshire.
In Cheshire there are actually two places, Brereton Green a
couple of miles or so west of Congleton, and Brereton Heath
about a mile north. One of them, probably Brereton Heath, is
mentioned in the Domesday Book as Bretone, it acquired its
modern form in 1289. The name comes from the Old English
brr meaning briar plus the suffix tŭn
referring to an enclosed place such as a settlement or a
farm: a farm established where the briars grew.
The Staffordshire village, a little over 10 miles south-east of
Stafford, is recorded in 1279 as Breredon. The first
element of the namee is the surname; the second element is from
the Old English dŭn meaning hill; a place
establish on Briar Hill.(9) page 105.
