BRENNAN

BRENNAN is an irish patronym from the Gaelic Ơ Braonain. The name comes from the Gaelic word braon which has at least two meanings. One is dripping water and the other is sadness. The two meaings could be related through the connotation of a tear, which is a drop of moisture.
The latter meaning is more likely to be the source of the name, probably something to do with a time of sorrow in the family or sept, of which there are four scattered around the central west and the south of Ireland. They are all unrelated.
Brǒen or Braon was a personal name associated with the chiefs of Leinster. There was also a St Brǒen of Cashel whose feast day is 8 June.
The modern Brennan could also be a diminutive of Brǒen or Braon. It is also used as a personal name.
Breen is from the same source.(9) page 105.
