BLACK
BLACK is an English and Scottish nickname with a contradictory etymology.
It is a very old nickname for a dark or swarthy person, from the Old English blœc. It is also a nickname for a very fair or pale person from the Old English blāc meaning pale or white.
Both of these OE Words have also provided the basis for Blake.
The Scottish and Irish Gaelic word dubh is also often anglicized as Black
Finally, many Jewish immigrants from Western European countries anglicised their surname tobe more easily understood. Black for the German Schwartz was quite common. (9)page 91.
