BENTLEY

BENTLEY is an English toponym for one of the many places in England with this name. Two such places are noted in the domesday Book as Bendlege and Hungre Beneleie, both in Derbyshire. They get their names from the Old English word beonet meaning benigrass and leah meaning a clearing in the woods. These would have been farms established in a clearing overgrown with benigrass.
A Joshua Bentley was a sailor on board the Lady Penrhyn with the First Fleet. He fathered a son named Joshua who was born at sea bfore arriving in Australia. (9) page 85.
