BARKER

BARKER is an occupational name for someone who tanned leather. The word comes form the Old English beorcan,Middle English barken which was the bark of a tree., and of course the bark of certain trees were used in the process of tanning leather.
The Origin of beorcan is most likely Scandinavian.
Another probable source for the name is from the Old French word berchier meaning a shepherd. Indeed there was a Ralph Berker recorded in York in 1185 and Aluredus le Berkier in the Pipe Rolls of Lincolnshire in 1193.
There was also a John le Barker recorded in the assizes of Cambridgeshire in 1260. (9) page 76.
