ASH

ASHMAN has two origins. It is a toponymic variation of ASH, a person who liver near an ash grove or a prominent ash tree.
It can also be from a different source but still related to the tree. The Old English word œsc refers toa boat made from the ash tree and Ashman is a person who worked on a boat and the name was sometimes used as a term for a pirate.
There is an Assemanus mentioned in the Domesday Book but given the Latin training of the Domesday Book scribes this could be an entirely different name, probably something to do with the hand (Latin manus). (9) page 64.
