ANDREWS

ANDREW is an English form of the Greek name Andreas, an ancient Greek name meaning manly, from the Greek element andr, man or warrior.
Jesus’ first disciple, the brother of Simon Peter, was called Andrew but it is unlikely thatit was this correct name, which would probably have been Hebrew. Biblical translations, from the original Aramaic through Greek into Latin and then into English tended to use names that approximated the original but were closer to names in use at the time of translation.
However, the first St Andrew certainly made the name popular and it is now found all over Europe in many forms, both as first and surnames such as Andrews and Tandy.
The name did not enter Britain until after the Norman invasion. The Domesday Book (1086) records a sub-tenant by the name of Andreas; from that time on it became quite popular and still holds its place in the rankings.(9) page 56.
