AARONS

AARON: The first name in the book, extremely old, popular and well known, yet the meaning and origin of the name is unclear. Aaron was the elder brother of Moses and the first High Priest of the Israelites.
The brothers were born in Egypt of Jewish parents around the latter half of the 14 century BC and later led the Israelites out of bondage in Egypt to the Promised Land in 1250 BC. Exodus 28i:1 in the Old Testament.
Both names (naturally enough) are now considered Hebrew. The best guess of the etymologists is that Aaron means mountainfrom the Egyptian (Arabic) work haroun, which is an Arabic name. Haroun al Raschid or Haroun the Just was the ruler who wandered the streets of Baghdad disguised as a beggar in order to better understand his people.
This is a reasonable assumption, particularly as the Hebrew phrase har-on means mountain of strength.
In most books on names, then, you will find that Aaron is given the meaning mountain, signifying solidness and strength. Of course, har-on could have been derived from Aaron (the name) at a later date, as a tribute to Aaron (the man).
Aaron is an important figure in the Old Testament (Exodus). When the Lord ordered Moses to go to Pharaoh and demand the release of the Hebrew slaves, Moses spoke words to the effect: ‘I’m not much of a speaker but my brother Aaron is, can he speak for me, please?’ Aaron became Moses’ spokesman in most things and it was he who, in front of Pharaoh, threw down his staff (or rod), which became a serpent, in order to convince the Egyptians that he meant business. Using the same rod, he brought down three of the plagues (frogs, blood and lice).
There is invariably a Gaelic alternative to the origin of many current English names and Aaron is no exception. There was a Celtic saint named Aaron, and one of the few British martyrs who suffered under Diocletian’s persecution was an Aaron. It is likely therefore that the name is also an equivalent of an old Gaelic name.(9) page 41
