On a beautiful night for baseball, the Malverne boys chalked up their first win of the season, defeating Roslyn 7-5. Chris R was the starting pitcher tonight and registered two scoreless innings of work. The boys got on the board early when Alec D drew a walk in the first inning and came around to score later in the inning.
In the bottom of the second inning Chris R drew a two out walk and then swiped second and third. Alec D followed that with his own walk and a stolen base as well. With two runners in scoring position Connor W continued his awesome play by drilling a base hit which drove in two runs. His aggressive base running made Roslyn toss the ball around a little too much and he came all the way around to score. Malverne led 4-0 after two innings.
Pat O then took his turn on the hill with Glen C as his catcher. He notched two strikeouts on his way to a 1-2-3 inning. In the bottom of the third inning, Matt S clocked a long shot to center field, but the Roslyn outfielder made a great catch. Pat O kept the shutout going with another fine inning of pitching, along with some help at shortstop by Nick B.
The boys broke it open in the fourth inning after Glen walked and stole second and third. Alec followed with his third walk of the day and quickly stole second. Nick B then launched a frozen rope into the left centerfield gap for a triple, picking up two R.B.I�s on the play. Chris R picked up an R.B.I himself by singling to right. Malverne now had a 7-0 lead after 4 innings.
Matt S came in to close out the last two innings along with Alex K as his catcher. Roslyn made a bit of a comeback, scoring five times in the fifth to make it a 7-5 game. Roslyn escaped the bottom of the fifth holding Malverne scoreless. With a two run lead in the final inning Matt S was determined to put this one away and give Malverne their first victory. With the tying runs on first and second and one out the batter smashed a grounder to the left of third baseman Nick B who dove and made the grab and was still able to tag out the runner going to third. So, with Roslyn down to their last out, Matt S wasted no time in finishing them off by making the batter hit a weak grounder to first baseman Glen C who scooped it up and stepped on first base giving Malverne their VICTORY!!!
