On a very hot afternoon the Malverne boys played another unscheduled game with the Valley Stream tournament team. Brendan was named starting pitcher today along with Franklin as his catcher. Valley Stream scored four times in the first inning, taking an early 4-0 lead.. In the second, with one run in already, and bases loaded Brendan got out of a jam with help from shortstop Connor W who cut down a run at the plate on a force play. Brendan then helped himself by striking out the next batter to end the inning. In the second inning Liam led off with a perfectly placed bunt base hit. John B then hit a ground ball and forced a bad throw by hustling down to first, while Liam came all the way around to score, getting Malverne on the board. After two innings Malverne trailed 6-1.
John B took the mound in the third inning with Alex as his catcher. Valley Stream managed only one run in the third due to some great defense by the boys. Shortstop Nick B who dove to his left and came up throwing for one out and Patrick O who almost made a great catch in left, but he stayed with it and threw out the runner trying to stretch it into a double.
In the bottom of the third with the bases loaded Patrick O lined a base hit to right driving in two runs bringing the score to 7-3 In the fourth inning John B put down Valley Stream in order with a strikeout, a pop-up to Patrick O and a grounder to second that was fielded by Matt S. In the bottom of the fourth with a man on second and two outs, Matt S launched a rocket to center but it was caught to end the inning.
Liam was called on to pitch the final two innings with Joe F helping out behind the plate. He picked up the first out by grabbing a grounder to his left and making a fine throw to nab the runner. Connor W then registered the second out by snatching a foul pop-up outside of third base. After that Valley Stream scored four times and it would have been more if not for Chris R catching a line drive to right field for the last out. In the home fifth, Conner bounced back to the pitcher but after a bad throw ended up at second. He then stole third and scored on a Chris R ground out. At the end of five Valley Stream led 11-4. They tacked on a few more runs in the top of the sixth and put Malverne down 1-2-3 in their last at bat.
