Stephen Fatherly Pilley was born 4 July, 1805 in Edgecombe Co., NC., and died 12 November, 1873 in Georgiana, AL. He is buried in Wesley Chapel (eight miles east of Georgiana).
Stephen may be the son of Robert Pilley of North Carolina. His grandfather was William J. Pilley of Northern Ireland and came to America as a British soldier during the American Revolution. W.J. deserted from the British Army and joined the Patriot cause according to family legend.
Stephen was an orphan, and was apprenticed to a goldsmith in Raleigh. He later went by wagon train with members of a Graham family of North Carolina to what is now Mississippi. Pilley at first got a job as a fiddler with a dance troupe in Mobile, AL. He eventually felt called to the ministry. He became an apprentice minister-in-training and met (or re-met) William Graham, who had founded a small Methodist church north of Pascagoula.
Stephen married about 1833 to
Sarah Bazalece Graham in Moss Point, MS. She was the daughter of William Graham and Elizabeth Cumbest. Sarah was born 16 December, 1816 in what is known as Jackson Co. MS.
She died 29 October, 1899 in Georgiana, and is buried next to her husband.
Stephen and Sarah moved to Brooklyn, Alabama after November, 1835 and before October, 1837. Stephen was a Methodist minister in many locations throughout central and southern Alabama. In 1844 he was pastor of the Court Street Methodist Church in Montgomery (now the First Methodist Church.) Three of their sons went into the Methodist ministry, two of these were Confederate Chaplains.
Their children are:
1. William Beasley Pilley, born 28 November, 1835 in MS. He was a Veteran of the Civil War. He was the first Teacher in Westlake, LA., and also preached in the area. On January 4, 1863 he married Samantha Anna Miller in Winsboro, MS. He died 15 November, 1917 and is buried in the Pilley Cemetery in Westlake, LA.
2. Stephen Abiezer Pilley, born 5 October, 1837 in Monroe Co., AL., and died 15 November, 1909 in Tropy, AL. He is buried in Oakwood Cemetery in Troy. Stephen was a Veteran of the Civil War and was a Methodist Minister. He married 30 December, 1871 in Montgomery Co. AL., to Effie Jane Hodge.
3. Frances Pilley, born 1838 in Alabama, and believed to have married a Rev. William Clark and had a daughter who married Rev. A. H. Matthews, a Presbyterian minister.
4. Mary Susan Pilley, born 2 November, 1841 in AL.,and died 21 February, 1902 in Georgiana, AL., and buried in Oakwood Cemetery. Mary S. married 2 January, 1866 in Brooklyn, Conecuh Co., AL. to the Rev. Benjamin LaFayette Selman
5. Martha A. Pilley, born 18 January, 1842 in AL., and died 6 July, 1871 in Butler Co. She married a Mr. Scoggins.
6. Sarah J. Pilley, born 1844 in AL. It is thought she died in Hattiesburg, MS. Sarah married twice; (1) to Mr. Lance and (2) to William R. Pope.
7. Eliza Pilley, born 1846 in AL.
8. Robert Soule Pilley, born 29 May, 1848 in Chambers Co., AL., and died 27 December, 1912 in Georgiana, AL. Robert was a School Teacher and later Postmaster for years in Georgiana, and very active in the Methodist Church. He married 29 January, 1880 in South Butler Co. to Sarah Jane Johnson.
9. Charles Bilbro Pilley, born 2 September, 1850 in Auburn, AL.
He died 2 February, 1919 in Florala, AL., and is buried at Geneva, AL. He was a Methodist minister. He married Laura Marietta Wingate 28 November,, 1878 in Eufaula, AL.
10. Catherine Augusta Pilley, born 24 January, 1852 AL.
11. Julia Ellison Pilley, born 12 November, 1853 AL.
12. Ida Graham Pilley, she is believed to have married a Scoggin or Berry, and died in Texas.
13. George Andrew Pilley, joined the Methodist Church in Georgiana by certificate in 1898. At one time he was a music teacher in Westlake, LA. Said to be living with his sister Ida and her family in Texas when he died. He never married.
14. Henry Bascom Pilley, born 10 August, 1857 AL.
Henry Bascom Pilley was born 20 August, 1857 in Hardaway, Macon Co., AL., and died 7 January, 1927 in Albany, GA.
He studied law with Hon. J.C. Richardson. He took the examination in November, 1879 and at once entered the practice. He was appointed Register in Chancery the same year.
He married 19 December, 1877 to Missouri Antoinette Shine in her father�s home in Oakey Streak, AL., by his brother, Rev. Charles Bilbro Pilley. She was the daughter of William Porter and Martha Hammond Shine. Missouri was was born 13 Octobeer, 1859 in Oakey Streak, AL., and died 30 July, 1932 in Greenville. Both Henry and Missouri are buried in Greenville.

1. Robert Floy Pilley, born 18 October, 1879 Greenville, and died 11 December, 1966 in Columbia, SC. He is buried in Greenville.
2. Effie Gertrude Pilley, born 30 April, 1882 Greenville, died 8 March, 1952 Gaffney SC. Married (1) Mr. Taylor, (2) J.M. Stabler, (3) Charles Montrose Smith and (4) Lee George. She is buried nest to C.M. Smith in Gaffney, SC.
3. Aline Rivers Pilley, born August 1883 AL.
4. Henry Bascom Pilley Jr., born 28 December, 1884 Greenville, and died 23 October, 1918 Ensley, AL. He is buried in Greenville. He married Emma Green, born 7 October, 1893 Crowley, LA., and died 17 November, 1961 Freeport, TX.
5. Bettie Lois Pilley, born 10 January, 1888 Greenville, and died 11 November, 1965 Atlanta, GA. She married John Thomas Bobbitt.
6. Stephen Porter Pilley, born 20 April, 1895 Greenville, and died 17 April, 1931 Albany, GA. He married Birdie Lee Fallaw 1913 in Florida. She was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Fallaw Jr. and Lillian Iola Womack. Birdie was born Oct 27, 1894, Georgiana, AL., and died 13 May, 1951 Birmingham, AL. Buried in Elmwood Cemetery there.
