Richard Burton
of Virginia

Richard Burton is thought to be from England. He married Katherine Christian. There are several lines who carry the name of Christian, some being grandchildren, both male and female.

Richard Burton appears as a headright of Thomas Lucas and was associated on the records with the Catletts, Valentine Allen and others who took up lands in the Rappahannock section. He is probably one of several who were brothers with the Burton name.

John Burton of Isle of Wight and Richard Burton, of Essex or Rappahannock (possibly what was then Lancaster Co.) were brothers.

It appears that Valentine Allen, Thomas Page, Richard Burton, the Catletts and the Hunts were all neighbors and most certainly had close family ties with the families intermarrying.

Richard Burton, of the above, who was a "headright" of Thomas Lucas, without doubt was the same Richard who was a witness in Rappannock Co. in favor of John Catlett after 1656 and prior to 1664.

A John Burton patented lands in Lancaster County in 1662; and probably the son of Richard. Samuel Burton was in the same neighborhood Dec. 7, 1655 and ordered to turn in his tithables to Abraham Weekes.

Robert Burton, on the same date Dec. 7, 1655, was admitted as the guardian of John Johnson and his brothers and sisters. This would appear John Johnson's father had recently died and Robert Burton had married the widow, John's mother.
