Match Report - Round 15
vs Yenda
Group 20
Season 2003 Grand Final replay, version 2. Almost an identical result to the first round when Yenda were successful 52/30, this round 52/32.

Whereas in Round 1, West Wyalong never really got close, in the return match it was touch and go for 60 of the 80 minutes. With only 20 minutes on the clock remaining the sides were locked together at 26/26, after a half time scoreline of 20/20.

Similar to last week v Yanco, the Mallee Men could not maintain the strong defence needed against a much heavier pack of forwards, for the entire game. In the latter stages of the second half, Yendas big men made the center of the ruck theirs, and controlled the ball well, setting up their speedy backs for raid after raid on the Wyalong line.

The ability of Yendas forwards to hit the defence hard and off-load to back up players at pace, was the difference. Too often West Wyalong were caught short of defenders wide out, allowing Yenda to run in 7 of their 10 tries through their backline.

It is interesting to note that the sides in the competition that sit first and second, are the sides with heavy, mobile forward packs, that is Yenda and Yanco.

From a review of the competition status after Round 15 with 3 remaining, it appears that West Wyalong will not be able to improve on its current 5th spot, which means that we will play the knockout semi-final at home, most likely v Griffith Black & Whites.
