The story of Robert's ChevelleThe car I am driving now...is an originally owned 72 Chevelle SS that my
father bought brand new in the fall of 1971.He took very good care of the car and drove it
up until 1988. Then he gave the car to my younger brother who was living with my father at
the time, but my brother was too young and didn't have a job at the time and the car
needed to be restored. So the car was brought to my mother's house and just sat for 5
years in the driveway.
So I then became very interested in it and bought it from my brother
for $800.00 in the summer of 1993. I then had the motor pulled and rebuilt which is a 402
big block that was bored 0.30 over with a crane 500 lift camshaft, hedders, aluminum
intake and modified quadrajet carburator. Then me and a friend of mine did all the body
work over, welded in new floor boards, sandblasted the frame and under-carriage, rims and
engine bay and then painted that. Then the body work was very little in which we welded in
new bottom's of both front fenders, primer and primer sealed the car and the color of the
car is now gloss black... which looks excellent! It also has a M22 muncie stonecrusher 4
speed and weber racing clutch with 3.55 rear end gears. The car is very fast and beats
alot of the 5.0 mustang gt's and 1997 LT1 350 camaro's.
It took me about 4 years to do the restoration and I just finished
putting in a new gas tank and sending unit 2 days ago for the last piece of my
restoration.
I have replaced every mechanical part in the car so far, right down
to the universal joints! I have gone through the whole suspension, rear end, trans-
mission ( which was very expensive to rebuild), exhaust system, etc. It was alot of HELL
but when I look back it was well worth it. The engine was dyno'd at 387 horsepower and 460
lbs. of torque at 4300 rpm.
