The School of Rock - review

Starring: Jack Black, Mike White, Joan Cusack
Directed by: Richard Linklater

There's no way not to like The School of Rock. Jack Black continues to be extremely likeable in anything he does and we could only hope he remains on a roll, because he's a great comedic talent.

Black plays Dewey, a guy who likes to rock and nothing else. While gearing up for a Battle of the Bands, his band (that he started) decides to kick him out because, they claim, he's not taking it seriously. Dewey needs the money from the Battle to pay this month's rent, otherwise he gets kicked out of his apartment. Then, a stroke of good fortune comes his way when Dewey intercepts a phone call intended for his roommate, Ned. Posing as Ned, he takes a job as a substitute teacher at a snooty private elementary school. Once there, he realizes the musical potential his students have and begins to mold them in his image and forms a band with which to enter the Battle and show everyone he knows how to rock.

You know the movie will end happily but that does not detract from its enjoyment. Black has an incanny ability to turn ordinary lines into funny lines with his delivery. Just the way he says things or acts is funny. Letting his loose in an elementary school was a brilliant idea. We get to see how much of a kid he actually is. And he's also a good musician, as are the kids in the movie, who all play their own instruments. Black's physical comedy is something we don't see too often and I could only hope Black has a great career ahead of him, cuz he's one talented dude.

Even though this movie is not anything that will stick with yo for life, it's definitely a great time at the movies and a recommended for anyone, whether you like rock or not.
