Secret Window - review

Starring: Johnny Depp, John Turturro, Maria Bello, Timothy Hutton
Directed by: David Koepp

Howdy!

Overall: This was a decent movie but was slow at times and somewhat lacking in originality. Overall, I was a bit disappointed.

The Buildup: There is so much buildup in this movie. From the eerie music to camera shots to the pop-out-of-the-closet surprises, you keep expecting something to happen. Instead, nothing really happens, and Johnny's character goes back to sleeping on his nasty old couch. At the end of the day however, you can only take so much teasing without getting annoyed. By the end of this movie, I was annoyed by this lack of action or movement in the story.

Johnny's Back: Why did I go see this movie? Because I liked Pirates of the Caribbean, that's why. Johnny Depp is a great actor with an incredible range. Contrast his character in Secret Window with Pirates and you will see what I mean. Once again, his acting is fantastic and he saves what would be an otherwise boring movie. You can't help but be fascinated with the characters he portrays and trying to understand the meaning of their eccentricity.

Storyline?: The story is ok. I guess this movie was based on a Stephen King short story, big deal. Sure, some movies based on his works have been very popular, including Misery, Shawshank and The Green Mile, but can we honestly expect every one to be a hit? Point and case, remember the horror that was Dreamcatcher? Oh well, the story here is ok. Secret Window is more a mystery movie than anything else and that is not my favorite genre, to be honest. Of course, there are lots of twists and turns, dropped hints and suspicions about how the movie will play out. As far as I'm concerned, it is the ending that saves this movie although I'm certain many will disagree with me. It wasn't what I expected but I found it to be entertaining.

In the End: All I can say is that this movie is dark. Much darker than it first appears and I like that. To be sure, it is a disturbing movie but at least it provokes some kind of reaction from the audience. Too bad they overdid it with the build up and anticipation at times. As I said in the beginning, this was a decent movie overall, though not spectacular.

Now, would anyone want to join me for another helping of corn? I'm feeling hungry all of a sudden!
