Once Upon a Time in Mexico - review

Starring: Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp
Directed by: Robert Rodriguez

A loose sequel at best, OUaTiM in a fun time at the movies. Nothing too deep, EXTREMELY violent and sometimes funny, you can't go wrong paying matinee $$ for this flick.

Banderas reprises his role of El Mariachi from Desperado but Johnny Depp steals the show as a crooked CIA agent who hires Banderas to kill a general after the general kills the president of Mexico. While the plot is a little confusing after the nth double-cross, it doesn't matter. The action is great, which nicely choreographed gun battles that seem to flow beautifully. You'll see violence like you've never seem before in this movie. People's legs exploding open, people getting hit straight-on by cars, etc. In fact, the hit-and-runs were so shocking that I was in disbelief.

But Depp is spectacular. His sarcasm is makes his character very funny. Even after a certain turning point in the movie (which I won't spoil), he doesn't change at all. His character is so consistent, thus he is too cool. This role combined with Pirates puts him in a simply unbelievable class. Had anyone else done this role, I probably wouldn't give the movie a face card. But as it is, Depp makes any movie in which he appears interesting, at the very least.
