How High - review

Starring: Method Man, Redman, Mike Epps, Chuck Davis
Directed by: Jesse Dylan

If you're an itoop loyalist, you know that MastaCSG has been on my case to write this review. I know, I know I'm a slacker, but to be honest I wasn't sure how much of this movie I would remember. But now that I think about it, I think I'd rather just forget it entirely.

How High is the story of Redman and Method Man, two drug dealers who discover a super potent form of marijuana. Where do they get this pot? Well, you see, their good friend and fellow dealer Ivory (played by Chuck Davis) passes away and their use his body as fertilizer for the marijuana. They discover that this weed is so potent that it temporarily makes Redman a genius in school, such that Redman and Method Man are off to Harvard... for some reason.

Yah.... uhmmm... no, really. That's the story. What's even worse is that all of this happens in the first half of the movie, and the rest of it is just random scenes of partying and more partying. There really is no point to it. I challenge you all to find some nugget of meaning to this movie. Something - anything!

That's not to mention the obscene cursing in How High. If this movie were censored, it would be a silent film. The swearing really is overwhelming, but strangely... appropriate given the context of the movie. As if that's an excuse.

It's funny to remember this movie, because everything I can recall is plain awful. The appalling innuendo, the puking, the stereotypes, and so on. Not that some of the jokes weren't worth laughing over, including the ones with scrawny Harvard preppy hall monitor mother f*ckers and rowing team b*tches. errr... NOW I'm starting to remember this movie. White people pretending to be black is worthy of a laugh too, as shown in the scene with the white professor of the black history class. Oh, they're such clever rappers aren't they?

In brief, I'm sure you can understand that we were all quite surprised that we watched the whole thing. No one will admit it, but there were a few of us that watched How High. They are:

Take that! To top it off, I think MastaCSG said it best when he proclaimed that "Every black man in North America should apologize for this movie."

Yes, that's a start.

DVD features: find the stash. An endearing feature where you must find the stash of weed in the DVD menus. We failed.

Additional tip: the dollar store is NOT a good film resource.
