Barney's Story

The Middle

I'm a big boy now.
I'm not afraid of Lions!

I repeated the initial exercise of getting in without going anywhere and managed to get to the vet. On the return journey I stopped at the common; subsequently taking him there daily. He soon came to associate going in the van with something nice, and after two weeks would get in without a struggle. I now have the problem of him becoming over-excited, especially while travelling to the common for our daily walk.

I'm a big boy now.
Is that a Squirrel

A first he was travel sick after only a short distance, but has outgrown this to some extent. He is still sick after going along winding country lanes for a few miles, but longer journeys on straight roads may help overcome this. Last year we traveled 50 miles away. He was all right on the journey home, and I think if we could undertake longer distances on a more regular basis, he would overcome this problem. However on our arrival he appears to suffer no ill effects, being instantly his usual, ebullient self.

He keeps making me stand here.
It's a Large Common!

The first attempts to leave Barney in the house on his own were traumatic for both of us. He continually barked, tried to dig his way out under the door, and urinated on the floor. At first I did not re-enter until he was quiet, something that kept me outside for half an hour in the cold and rain on more than one occasion. I found the dog-training discs I had used with success for recall and stays quietened him, enabling me to re-enter. I ignored him for a few minutes, also leaving any mess he had made.

I like sitting here.
Maybe I'm a Cat

After about three months I found he could be left without problems for about an hour. Other than he has occasionally chewed a magazine, and once a pair of slippers, he now has no problems with being left; but once again, leaving him for longer spells more frequently would improve things further. I do not have to leave him on his own very often, but I think I would return to chewed shoes, or other articles if I left him all day.

I don't know.
He must have included this to fill the page. I look Awful

Because he had been brought up without the intervention of human ignorance, which so often ruins a dog's ability to interact with other animals and humans, he has a natural aptitude that is superb. We have met several dogs whose owners say their dog will fight, only to be amazed a few minutes later seeing them playing together; this is because we have introduced them to each other under proper control, and Barney has quickly taught the other dog how to behave. I believe he is a dog animal behaviorists would like to work with, for helping to train dogs brought to them with aggression, and anti-dog behavior problems; a fact shared by some experts we have met.
