THE WEB OF SIN

I watched one listless summer day
A spider and a fly,
The strong survive life'schangeless code;
One lives,and one must die.
With fearless courage the fly would walk
Along each danger-filled thread,
With little thought that in moments few
He would be lifeless.cold,and dead.

He wandered down broad avenues
With adventure, strong and bold.
Knowing little of danger near,
His life he cheaply sold.
I thought to myself as I watched this sight,
And fear welled up within.
I thought of the millions caught every day
In the spider web of sin.

Its dazzling beauty catches the eye;
Its sights near take one's breath.
But behind the beauty of it all
Is sorrow, pain, and death.
Many a man with adventure bold
Left home and friends for fame
And caught within the web of sin
Ended his life in shame.

Many a youth in innocence true
Has found himself within
The entangled threads of vice and crime
In the cold, cruel web of sin.
Many a girl has cheaply sold
Her priceless soul for naught.
Quite sure that she could make her way,
Soon found that she was caught.

Within the tangled web of sin,
She tried vainly to travel on
But found to her shame and sorrow
Her name and purity gone.
If the fly could have spoken,
He would have said in his last grasping breath,
Never enter this cold, cruel web,
For the wages of sin is death.
