You say you have friends who are famous
And their exploits are known far and wide;
You say you have friends with big money,
And their names you speak with much pride.
Well, I really don't mean to be bragging,
But I would like to ask you and see
If you have a friend who's like Jesus,
For He's the greatest of friends to me.
Do you have a friend who is able to stand
In the midst of the foam and the spray
And cry peace to any angry tempest
And have the wind and the water obey?
Do you have a friend who is able to stand
Before the lame with his cane or crutch
And see the lame leap as a doe
With a word, a smile, or a touch?
Have you a friend who is so mighty
That He can raise the dead from the grave?
I have a friend who cleansed the leper,
And new life to the dying He gave.
Have you a friend with big money
Who with no thought of cost or loss
Would give his life to save you
And die on a rough rugged cross?
Will one of your famous friends give you
A life and a home in the sky?
I doubt that you have such a friend,
Who could offer you life when you die.
Can one of your friends take life's burdens
And shoulder the load all for you?
Do you have a Friend like my Jesus;
Do you have a friend so true?
I know you have friends with big money,
And some may have quite a name,
But if you've never met my Jesus,
My friend, I think it's a shame.
Why, He unrolled the heavens that cover
The endless expanse of the stars;
He holds the heavens together
Without treaties of peace or wars' scars.
Yes, He made the earth and the sky, friend;
He holds the great seas in his hand.
He rides the clouds thru the heavens
And poureth the rain on the land.
He maketh the desert to blossom
And produces the breath-taking rose
His fingers shaped the great mountains;
He causeth the wind that blows.
Tho' all your friends may be famous
And have great wealth of their own,
I'd rather have friendship with Jesus
And be nameless and poor and unknown.
Yes, sir, I'd rather know the one called Jesus
Than all the rich men you know.
For He owns all the world and its contents,
And He goes wherever I go.
He'll never forsake or forget me,
And as long as I walk in His way,
I'll live with Him forever
In heaven's endless day.
So brag on your friends if you want to;
Tell of their riches and fame.
And I'll go on trusting in Jesus
And trust not in life's ruthless game.
Tell of all their good successes;
Brag on all the other,
But remember the one who owns it all
Is none else than my Big Brother.
