One day I found a secret
That's been worth gold to me.
I call my troubles lessons
In the school of eternity.
Some of them are hard, I know,
But this secret that I own
Helps me to turn each stumbling block
Into a stepping stone.
Some folks resent the ways of life
And fight a constant fight.
They live in endless anger
And walk in darkest night.
They wonder why life seems so rough
And why things don't go their way.
They resent the hand of God to help
And walk on in dismay.
Some folks resign to the ways of life;
They accept it and walk on,
Not whining or caring or cyring,
But delight when it's all gone.
Their life is one long treadmill;
Each hour is as long as a day.
They resign to accept the trials of life
And walk on their humdrum way.
Then there are those who rejoice
When things don't go their way,
And life is one long blessing;
Each dawn brings a joy filled day.
They laugh in the face of danger;
They smile in the face of fear.
For He who watches the sparrow
Is watching very near.
They rejoice in tribulation;
They glory in it all.
They know with their election sure,
They can never fall.
So don't resent, resign but rejoice, my friend,
You do not walk alone,
And to step upon a stumbling block,
You make a stepping stone.
