Hylocereus Undatus - White variety Hylocereus Polyrhizus- Red variety The generic name for Dragon Fruit is "Pitaya" as it is known in North America. Dragon Fruit is relatively new to Malaysia. It originated from Central America and it was brought into Vietnam by the US Army during the Vietnam War. Since then, it has been cultivated commercially in large scale farms in Vietnam.
Harvesting Period The optimal harvesting times vary between 25th and 28th days after flowering for export fruit, and 29-30th days after flowering for local markets.
Uses of Dragon Fruit Dragon fruit is usually chilled and eaten fresh. It's flesh is bland to sweet in taste and quite refreshing. It can also be used in the preparation of cocktails and refreshments. Other experimental uses include ice cream and wine.
Quality Criteria Market requirements state that Dragon Fruit on arrival should be physically mature, firm, free from fungal, insect, skin splitting, punctures, dirt and bruise damage. It should also achieve at least 70% red coloration on it's body.
Packaging Cardboard boxes are normally used. The fruit is wrapped individually in paper and packed in one single box. Generally 20 pieces per box with total weight of around 4 to 5 kg.
