Artocarpus heterophyllus Jackfruit is also known as nangka in Malaysia and the Philippines.
Origin and Distribution No one knows the jackfruit's place of origin but it is believed indigenous to the rainforests of the Western Ghats. (India) It is cultivated throughout South East Asia and South Asia.
Season In Asia, jackfruits ripen principally from March to June or April to September, depending on the climatic region.
Harvesting Fruits mature 3 to 8 months from flowering. Young fruits are usually covered with paper sacks to protect them from pests and disease. White gummy and sticky latex flows from the jackfruit stalk when the slightly underripe fruit is harvested. It is recommended to rubbed some cooking oil on the cutting knife and hands before the fruits are being sliced open.
Uses of Jackfruit Unripe fruits are usually use for cooking. Ripen fruit produces as many as 50 bulbs (flesh) which wrap around an individual seed. Bulbs are usually eaten raw. The seeds may be boiled or roasted and eaten like chestnuts.
