Dimocarpus longan Lour. Also known as dragon's eye. The fruits are small and round and have a single shiny black round seed inside. They grow in clusters and and should be purchase when still firm to the touch.
Origin and Distribution The longan is native to Southern China, in the provinces of Kwangtung, Kwangsi, Schhezwan and Fukien. Longan is now also grown in Malaysia. However there is another variety known as Mata Kuching (D. longan spp. malesianus) which is indigenous to Southeast Asia which is a vastly inferior fruit to longan, with very thin flesh.
Uses of Longan Longans are eaten fresh, out-of-hand. In China and Thailand, the majority are canned in syrup or dried.
Quality Criteria At room temperature, longans remain in good condition for several days.
Harvesting Period Irregular bearing period.
