Jacobites offer prayers

at the tombs

ALUVA: Thousands of faithful of the Jacobite Church, led by Catholicos Thomas I, metropolitans and priests, offered prayers at the tombs of metropolitans, near the disputed Thrikkunnath church here, in connection with the ‘orma perunnal,’ on Thursday.

The church has remained closed for the last three decades and the faithful, including bishops and priests of Jacobite Church, were prevented from offering prayers at the tombs for several years. The faithful and a priest of the Church were allowed to perform dhoopa prayers last year.

Hundreds of faithful of the Church reached Aluva on foot from Akaparambu and Paravur churches on Thursday evening in connection with the ‘orma perunnal.’ The members of Thrikkunnath St Mary’s parish joined the procession in front of the church.

The faithful, in a procession proceeded to the tombs and offered prayers.

A strong police contingent was deployed at the seminary on Thursday. District Collector Mohammed Hanish, RDO Mini Antony, and tahsildar P.S. Prasannakumari were also present.

The District Collector and Superintendent of Police M Wahab held discussions with the representatives of both Orthodox and Jacobite factions separately to settle the issue, but in vain.

However, the District Collector and the SP reportedly convinced the Catholicos designate Poulose Mar Milithios and officials of Orthodox Church that the devotees could not be prevented from offering prayers at the tombs.

But the officers promised that the closed Thrikkunnath Church would not be opened for prayers.

The faithful of the Orthodox Church, who were camping on the premises of the seminary chapel, shouted slogans against Catholicos Thomas I and metropolitans of Jacobite Church for entering the restricted area.

They alleged that the police and the district administration were supporting the rival faction.

Catholicos designate Mar Milithios and Metropolitan Kuriokose Mar Cleemis and seminary manager Fr M O John told this website's newspaper that it was a violation of the court order.

The Orthodox Church would move the court for redressal of grievances.
