Consecration of church begins

Catholicos leads the consecration service of St. Mary's Syrian Jacobite Church


The Leader of Opposition, Oommen Chandy, inaugurating the public meeting held in connection with the consecration

ceremony of the St Mary's Syrian Jacobite Church in Pathanamthitta on Friday evening.

Pathanamthitta: The consecration ceremony of the newly built St. Mary's Syrian Jacobite Church here began on Friday afternoon.

Catholicos of the Syrian Jacobite Church Baselius Thomas-I led the consecration service. The Bishops were escorted to the new church in a decorated motorised chariot in a colourful procession that began from the St. Peter's Church near the Collectorate in the afternoon. The dignitaries were accorded a rousing reception on the church premises, later.

Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy inaugurated the public meeting held in connection with the consecration ceremony, later.

Minister for Public Works T.U. Kuruvila inaugurated the charity schemes of the church on the occasion. Mar Thoma Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostum delivered the keynote address.

Marthandom Bishop of the Malankara Catholic Church Youhanon Mar Chrysostum; Geevarghese Mar Polycarpus; Geevarghese Mar Divannaseus; Joseph Mar Gregorios; Mathews Mar Theodoseus; Mathews Mar Aprem; Kuriakose Mar Eusebius; Markose Mar Chrysostomos; Francis George, MP; K. Sivadasan Nair and Adoor Prakash, MLAs; municipal chairperson Amrutham Gokulan; and District Congress Committee vice-president P. Mohanraj also spoke.

The second phase of the consecration service will be held on Saturday.
