Church centenary celebrations begin

KOCHI: The 15th centenary celebrations of Martha Mariam Valiya Pally began on Sunday.
Inaugurating the celebrations, Union Minister for Statistics and Programme Implementation Oscar Fernandes lauded the role of Christian missionaries in the education and health care sectors. The contributions of Christian missionaries in health care had been appreciated worldwide, he said.
Catholicos Baselius Thomas 1 presided over. Joseph Mar Gregorios, synod secretary; Fr. George Punnakottil, Catholic Bishop, Kothamangalam diocese; P.C. Thomas and Francis George, MPs; Geevarghese Mar Dionysius, Assistant Metropolitan of Simsahana Churches; V.J. Poulose, MLA; Kuriakose Mar Theophilus, Archbishop of Europe and the UAE; Fr. Shaji Paulose and V.V. Kurian, municipal chairman, Kothamangalam, attended.
The Church has planned a series of welfare activities relating to the centenary celebrations. These include mass marriages, financial aid for students and patients from economically backward sections, housing projects for them, free medical camps and seminars.
