Knanaya Jacobite Church to start medical college

KOTTAYAM: The Knanaya Jacobite Church is planning to start a medical college in the self-financing sector at Kulpamala in Payyoli, near Kozhikode.

A sum of Rs 50 lakh has been earmarked for the preliminary work for the college. Inclusive of this, a Rs 4.73-crore budget for 2004-05 with equal amount of accruals and expenditure was approved by the budget meet of the Church on Thursday.

Samudaya trustee Commander T.O. Elias presented the budget.

The
Nazareth Pharmacy College at Othara, Chengannur, under the church, which is set to be opened soon, will receive Rs 35 lakh.

The budget also provides funds for construction of 500 houses for the poor in association with the government through various schemes. Those having 2.5 cents of land and remain homeless are aimed to be made beneficiaries of the scheme.

The budget meet decided to revise the pay and service rules of priests in the Church. The meet felicitated Kuriakose Mar Severios, the newly consecrated Metropolitan of the Church.

Vicar-general Fr K.J. Abraham Kochuthazhath presided over the budget meet. Samudaya secretary Thampan Thomas presented a report. Kuriakose Mar Sevarios addressed the members.

Priest trustee Fr K.O. Joseph, V.A. Abraham, T.M. Thomas, Fr Anil K. Thomas and Fr Prasad Kovoor participated in the discussions.
