KOTTAYAM: Thousands of Knanaya Jacobites and members
of sister churches owing allegiance to the Holy See of Antioch thronged Puthen
Palli at Chingavanam this afternoon to welcome the newly consecrated Knanaya
Metropolitan Kuriakose Mor Sevarios, on his arrival from Damascus.
The long wait of Knanayites to have a Metropolitan, ever since the demise of
Abraham Mar Clemis, virtually transformed into a sea of crowd as Mor Sevarios
was led in an open chariot from here to Chingavanam. Hundreds of vehicles joined
the motorcade to accord a tumultuous welcome to the supremo. It eventually threw
vehicular traffic in the busy MC Road out of gear for hours. Catholicos Baselios
Thomas I presided over the reception meet held at Puthen Palli premises in the
evening.
Bishops Thomas Mar Theemotheos, Markose Mar Koorilose, Joseph Mar Gregorios,
Issac Mar Clemis and Geevarghese Mar Dionysious, ministers K M Mani, T M Jacob,
C F Thomas, Union Minister P C Thomas, K Suresh Kurup MP, MLAs K C Joseph,
Thomas Chazhikadan, Raju Abraham and others felicitated the Metropolitan.
Kuriakose Mor Sevarios in his reply speech said that he is eagerly looking
towards love and concern of faithfuls for him to discharge duties effectively.
Earlier, the Metropolitan was received at the Nedumbaserry airport in the wee
hours by community leaders and church administrator Fr A P Joseph Anjilimoottil
Cor Episcopa. Receptions were accorded in churches while he moved in a motorcade
through the Ernakulam-Ramamangalam-Kottayam route. He celebrated a Holy Mass at
the Valiya Palli here, in the morning.
A reception was accorded on behalf of the municipality to the Metropolitan at
Kodimata in the afternoon.
He reached Mavilangu in a procession and later moved towards Chingavanam in an
open vehicle. After reception at the entrance of the Salem church, the
Metropolitan proceeded to the Dayara church to offer a ‘‘dhoopa prarthana’’ on
the tomb of his predecessor, the late Abraham Mar Clemis. Catholicos Baselios
Thomas I led a ‘‘sunthroneeso service’’, prior to the public meet at Puthen
Palli.
