Malachowo on
physical maps of Wielkopolska, of Poland,
and of Europe .
Malachowo on a more detailed map
which shows its proximity to Gniezno
- the "nest" and an early, medieval seat of Polish monarchy
(see some nice
photos of the Gniezno Cathedral
by
Piotr D. Musial).
a bit more about Gniezno .
I don't have a picture of the medieval fort in Malachowo
but there is a webpage about a similar (although larger) fort in nearby
Grzybowo
(nice
reconstructions).
See Grzybowo on a map
(2 of the 4 sub-villages of Malachowo:
Malachowo-Kepe
and Malachowo-Wierzbiczany
are also visible here,
NE of Grzybowo and just W of Witkowo,
precisely where they have always been :-)).
the fort in Grzybowo does even have its own fan-club with an impressive
web-page .
visit a neighbouring village, Arcugowo:
"Witamy w internetowym Arcugowie" -
www.arcugowo.prv.pl ,
I recommend opening this link in a new window
(right ear of your mouse :-))
as this redirection-address may "catch" you
and you won't be able to return to Malachowo .
The "direct" address to Arcugowo is:
www.kki.net.pl/~ararra .
see the palace in a neighbouring village Niechanowo -
www.man.poznan.pl/~marcinp/pages/polska/gniezno3.html .
visit another village in the region:
"Fortified Settlement
(X-th century) in Grzybowo" -
www.wrzesnia.pl/grzybowo/Indexa.htm .
when the Germans came they were unable to learn the local placenames and also wanted to pretend the area was German so they renamed the region to "Wartheland" and Malachowo to "Malvenkamp" -
Friedebert Reihl,
born in "Malvenkamp", is now an artist (see some of his works).
