Why Gateau Rocks, and Why Canon Is Your Friend

Perhaps the reason for fans misjudging, ignoring,
and through fanfiction and site searches, and
information provided by Tabichan, I've learned
that the character of Gateau is NOT very well-loved
among fans. A lot of fanfiction either overlooks
some of his qualities and makes him a big, dumb
showoff or a sex maniac just panting to get into
Marron's pants. And if not that, then he becomes
Bastard!Gateau, a cruel, conniving, abusive rapist
who manipulates Marron or treats Carrot like dirt
simply because "he hates him".
whiny "How dare they say mean things about my
favorite character!!" rant. While I do like
Gateau a whole lot and hate to see him grossly
mischaracterized, that's not what annoys me about
these fics. What annoys me is that the authors
don't seem to have ANY grasp on series canon.
with girls on occasion (Though not nearly as often
as Carrot!), and constantly flirts with Marron,
who is pretty much indifferent. But...he's also
a nice guy who cares about his friends, his sister,
and the innocent people who don't deserve to be
tormented by the sorcerers. During battles, he
doesn't even flex ONCE even if his shirt happens
to get torn and reveal some flesh.
He's dead serious about his job. And even when he's
not working, he CAN go for more than 5 seconds without
ripping his clothes off and screaming "LOOK AT MEEEE!".
The bits where he DOES go around naked and throwing
random poses are often just for comic relief.
persistent. Yes, he never lets up no matter
how much Marron ignores him. But there's a
difference between playful flirting and sexual
harassment. Never once has Gateau made any
mean-spirited or condescending remarks towards
Marron, grabbed him inappropriately, or tried to
screw him against his will. All he does is
say how beautiful Marron is, or protect him in
battle.
idea that Gateau is shallow; only liking Marron
because he's beautiful. I can't speak for canon,
but I think it's safe to assume that Gateau,
despite his fondness for beautiful people, is NOT
shallow. Even though he calls Carrot "un-beautiful",
it's clear that he still cares for him as a friend.
So even though he IS totally captivated by Marron's
beauty, that isn't all he cares about. His
quote from the last volume of the manga:
destroy your beauty."
just like Marron's ivory complexion, shiny raven
hair, and tall, slender body. He likes Marron.
Whether you choose to see it as romantically
or platonically is your choice. ^~
that line. But hey, I AM a fangirl, and sometimes we
just can't help doing that.
I'm completely aware of his flaws. He's a showoff,
he comes on a little too strong and it wouldn't
hurt him to be a little more civil to Carrot. But
he DOES have his good points, and while I'm not out
to say they're "wrong" or "bad", I wish fanfic
authors would acknowledge them even a little. And
as for the Bastard!Gateau thing? I'll only say I
HATE it because I don't get WHERE people draw it from.
There's no evidence for it in canon, and whether or
not Gateau is "underdeveloped" characterization-wise,
he just doesn't SEEM the sort of person to be like
that, especially to someone he cares about.
or disliking Gateau is that they've only seen the
anime, or the dub of the anime. Gateau doesn't
get as much character development in the anime as
he does in the manga, and often seems a bit like a
fifth wheel. And his first dub voice, according to
Tabi, certainly can't help matters (I'm glad I haven't
heard it! I kind of like his second dub voice,
though. ^^).
Maybe some people just like the anime better than the
manga and work from there. But even with his lack of
development in the anime, Gateau's still more than a
muscle-bound showoff who wants into Marron's pants.
He's a nice guy, he just comes on a biiiit too
strong sometimes. XD
