Karl started his career as a luthier, building hand made electric Guitars and Basses in 1981, and opened Kaminski Stringed Instruments in his basement shop with encouragement from fellow musicians and named it Karl's Guitar Works. Expanding clientel and incresed demand for Kaminski Guitars and Basses required Karl to move his shop in 1995 to a facility located in Pittston Pennsylvania and also began building Acoustic Guitars, Acoustic Basses, Mandolins, and Ukuleles . With only one third of work being done on Guitar building, it was not fair to call the shop Karl's Guitar Works any longer and the name was changed to the more fitting Kaminski Stringed Instruments. On June 8,1996 Government Mule,a recently formed band consisting of Warren Haynes, and Allen Woody of the Allman Brothers band came to the Mantis Green Coffee House in Wilkes-Barre Pa. Karl took a Semi hollow body guitar with Les Paul styling, and a bass with a carved mandolin style scroll on the upper bout to the show and approched Warren and Woody after the show. Woody immediately placed an order for a customized version of the Bass, while Warren made a friendly comment about his sponsorship commitment with another guitar "manufacturer". A picture of Allen Woody appeared in the fall of 1999 issue of Bass Player Magazine with his collection of favorite electric and acoustic Basses, and the Kaminski Bass is standing up in the front row. Word quickly spread and orders for custom instruments began to grow. Bret Alexander, a Mandoiln and Guitar player with a band named "The Badlees" ordered his custom Mandolin and uses it for live performances as well as studio recording.
