London in Brief

I start knowing the metropolitan city of London as of Mr. Franklin came to our staff quarters and ask me if I would accompany him to the Indonesian Embassy at Governors Street. He instructed the girls to rest and promise to go out after we have reported our self to the Indonesian Embassy. We went to the Embassy by taxi. The taxi started with charging £ 2.00. I opened my city map and try to recognize the streets in London as I did before in Singapore. We went through Piccadilly Square, turn around some streets before we arrive at the Embassy. The Embassy is situated at  38 Grosvenor Square in an old typical London house in front of a Park and next to a Hotel and across the USA Embassy. We paid £ 6.60 for a ride that is approximately Rp. 105.000,--

But when we arrive here it is almost 11.30 a.m. and so all the staff have their Friday Sholat break. They told us to come back at 01.30 p.m. Mr. Franklin suggest me to go to the Mosque, which is according to the Embassy staff not far from the Embassy, just turn left and straight 100 meters. So we went there, to the Mosque, which belongs to the Egypt Society in London. So I did my Friday Praying, while Mr. Franklin await at the main entrance. The preach was in Arab  that I do not understand, but I praise Allah S.W.T that I have the change to praise Him from here in London After praying we walk back to the Embassy, cause it was not yet 01.30, the Embassy Staff invite us to have Lunch at the basement. We had our lunch and we paid £ 4.00; it was nasi putih (steamed pandan flavored rice) with sayur lodeh (vegetable coconut-milk broth) , tempe bacem (in banana leaf braised soy-bean cake), krupuk (shrimp crackers) a banana and "white" coffee; the last one is coffee with cream. As it is common every where in a self service restaurant that debraser has to be done by the guest her/himself, so we did it to. When went than to the immigration section and they told us that we the application should be completed with a photograph, that I do not bring with, and cause the 4th of June is a holiday, they suggest us to return back on Tuesday, June 5th. While waiting we met two students who are studying engineering and were very surprised that we from Makassar could have a practical training here in London.

We went back home by food, walking through Piccadilly  Street, St, James but than took the bus; Bus 9 that will stop not far from the hotel. We invite the ladies to have a sightseeing but before that we have our dinner at the personnel dining room. As told before by Ms. Beth Aarons; the Human Resource Manager, that dinner is served between 05.00 p.m. until 07.00 p.m. while breakfast is served between 07.00 a.m. until 08.00 a.m. and luncheon between 11.00 a.m until 02.30 p.m. Food is served in a buffet style and self-service. A variety of appetizers, soup, choice of main courses, salads and it's dressing, assorted bread, and dessert also fruits, fresh drinks, yogurt, coffee and tea. All of us, cause has been trained and use to these standards are familiar to this situation. It was delicious our first dinner in London.

After dinner we went out through the employee entrance, walk through a corridor, next to the main road: Strand, from the security entrance we can also walk through Savoy Hill, and comes out also to Strand .We took the left side from the hotel and walk in the direction to Charring Cross Station. At the corner to the station there is a Mc. Donald and next to MD is small supermarket, but complete, that we should know to buy our daily things during our stay in London. We walk into the station, just to know how the situation is and how we have to catch a train, how to buy a ticket. Just across the station there is the famous Pall Mall Trafalgar Square. We make some pictures, to send it to our parents, showing our read coats and scarf's. From here than we went on food to Piccadilly Square, than try to find the Big Ben. At Victoria Embankment we took we took some pictures with Big Ben and The House of Parliament as the background. We walk "home" via a garden. Here we saw, what we never see in Indonesia, where the youth are dating and kissing each another like no one is there, not surprise  cause these scene are also already common in Singapore when we did our first hotel attachment training there. It was already late in the evening; around 10.00 p.m. but cause it is spring it looks like afternoon. The sun goes down at around 10.30 p.m.

At our staff quarter we make some plans for Saturday, what we are going to do. It was decided that after breakfast we will go to the Buckingham Place. The ladies took a rest, while Mr. Franklin and I went our again to Charring Cross Station, finding information how he has to travel to Holland by train and boat. At the information desk the gentleman give us a brochure and inform that the fare is £ 50.00 for one way from London to Harwich; by train than continue by the fastest ferry from Sena Lines to Hoek van Holland, and from Hoek van Holland to Amsterdam by train. The train will depart from London at 08.50 a.m. and will arrive in Amsterdam at 05.00 p.m. Mr. Franklin did not yet by the ticket, cause has also planned to to go to Amsterdam via Hover, through the tunnel to Calais and from Calais to Amsterdam by train. He has not decided yet that evening!. From the station we went to
