THE TEENAGE ERA of the 60's
As A TEENAGER... Those "SUPERCALI... CAREFREE" YEARS
music playing is "Angel" originally by -you guessed it- Elvis Presley -- James Wages is the vocalist here. All Elvis fans must check out his page.
As a teen, My interests were not as varied as they are now. I had several, but the priorities were definitely in a different order. Music was tops on my list. I need not say more.
Like so many, I was a devout Elvis fan, who couldn't get enough of his music or films. And you are right. I am one of those who bought every one of his albums and several singles on the good ol' 45's. I still have the 45's and LP's, but rarely dig them out for listening pleasure. Instead, I use the CD on my computer and sway to his Commemorative Issue of "The Number One Hits" and his Greatest Sacred Performances, "Amazing Grace". To this day, whenever DJ's pull out the GOLDEN OLDIES and I hear his voice crooning out those notes, I feel a resurgence of excitement that went with the day.
Remember dancing to the music as it blared from the old jukebox that sat in the corner of every small cafe?
Jive was still very popular throughout the sixties, but most of us, yours truly included, knew all the funky dances. The dance craze included The Twist, The Monkey, The Mashed Potato, The Fish, to name but a few. I cannot even remember them all, there were so many.
And the parties...
We frequented the outdoor Drive-in for movie pleasure. It stood as a landmark and continued to be a main source for entertainment right up and into the early 1980's, at which time it was destroyed by a tornado and never restored.
I never made a date in advance. The town was my oasis and depending upon who asked me to join him determined which "group" -- we never referred to ourselves as 'gang' -- I hung with for the evening. In a small town, where many of the young men did not have a car as yet, we actually had a great deal of entertainment. We could partake in bowling, billiards (I was fair), movie theatre, curling, gym sports, dances, house parties, gravel pit parties, swimming. Just to name a few.
