| Makaha Beach | 2 |
Famous for its yearly Tandem Surfing competition. For the less athletic, this is a great beach for boogie boarding. |
| Kaneaki Heiau | 7 min walk, (1 min by car) |
This is Oahu's best restored heiau (traditional Polynesian temple or shrine). Located very near Makaha Vallye Plantation, it is in the center of the Makaha Valley and was originally dedicated to Lono, the god of agriculture. It was rededicated by King Kamehameha I as a war temple. Restoration was accomplished by the Bishop Museum, which added two prayer towers, a taboo house, drum house, alter and images of gods. Pili grass from the Big Island and ohia logs were used. To reach this heiau, turn off mauka (inland) Farr Hwy at Makaha Valley Road (at 7-Eleven) follow up past two golf clubs then right into Mauna Olu Estates and drive past the gatehouse (you may need to stop and inform them that you are visiting "Kaneaki Heiau". No admission is charged. nbsp; |
| Kea'au Beach Park | 18 |
Just 500 yds further out Farr Hwy from Makaha Beach, picnic/BBQ areas at the rocky shore, beautiful wide sandy surfing beach just north of park. |
| Ko Olina | 4-5 |
J.W. Marriott Hotel and Spa, fine restaurant, golf,
shops (West on Farr Hwy (HI93) Ko Olina Beach has been carefully designed with five man-made lagoons so its quiet, calm sandy beaches are a beautiful place to spend a morning or afternoon -- since there are few tourists and the Ko Olina Plantation (resort homes) and Marriott Timeshare is still being expanded. While there is a security entrance and the guard may ask you where you are going, all citizens have access to public beaches. Just tell him/her you are going to the beach (these close at sunset). |
Scuba Diving on the Leeward Coast | 2 |
The leeward Coast offers some of the most interesting and beautiful diving in Hawaii and probably the best on Oahu.p>
LOCATION: Numerous dive sites -- most of the best are accessible by dive boat. I can recommend Captain Bruce's Dives. They have the a selection of Lava Tubes, Sea Caves, Drift Dives, and WWII Wrecks and take the time to teach you about Hawaii's unique marine life and volcanic geology.
They are the ONLY company on Oahu that owns and operates our OWN boats on BOTH sides of the island which allows us the greatest variety of sites and ability to dodge dicey weather or surf conditions which are very localized daily. During April through November, they normally operate from the Waianae Boat Harbor
