LETTER TO EDITOR Date: July 08, 2000TRANSVESTITES GALORE
There has recently been a proliferation of gaudily dressed female impersonators around the posh localities in Karachi. The transvestites use all available methods to lure motorists into stopping their vehicles and giving these "ladies" what they seek. Why is there such an abnormal increase in this city that is known for its gung-ho and macho approach to life?
The very pertinent reasons are that due to an upsurge in the poverty level, due to the non-availability of decent jobs, and due to the desire to improve the standard of living, these persons go to the extent of displaying their "wares" to whosoever so needs. Furthermore, the resigned feeling that things will continue to downslide, the dispassionate approach to finding avenues of improvement, and the nonchalant attitude that there are many in this closeted society who need to release their frustrations have all been instrumental in the sudden increase in the transvestite population.
Unfortunately, the carnal connotations behind this psychological trauma are a serious cause for concern. The alarming rise in HIV positive cases among AIDS victims, the ignorance about safe-sex methods, and the extensive debauchery are dangerous and critical situations. Alas, there is the damn-care approach of those who are supposed to police the environment around the city. The worst fear is that these pseudo-enchantresses would captivate adolescents. Citizens and NGOs, like Helpline, Reformers, CPLC, who care and worry, should take the lead and eradicate this menace from society.
Sincerely:
