LETTER TO THE EDITOR Oct. 11, 1995

Sub: SUNDAY HOLIDAY

The business community has launched a campaign to revert to Sunday as the weekly holiday. However, there has been no response from the government yet. The SITE industrialists had brought up this issue during the Prime Minister’s visit to the SITE Annual Function last year. She advised us to get the consent of Maulana Kausar Niazi. At this moment in time, the Maulana is no more in this world. Nevertheless, the Sunday holiday issue remains unresolved.

Since there is no one in the government who is pragmatic enough to take a decision, it is then left upto the business community to unilaterally decide on a Sunday holiday. It is, therefore, proposed that all businesses and industrial units, all Chambers and all Associations should stay open on Fridays and take Sundays off. Since the Provincial government has allowed shops the facility to open their establishments on Fridays and holidays, they should also change their weekly off days to Sunday.

Of course, there will be the usual problems of government offices and banks enjoying Fridays and Saturdays off and thus there will be three bank holidays in a week. What the heck! In a pretty short time, the private banks and financial institutions will be compelled to stay open on Fridays.

There will be the routine brouhaha from the clergy. However, once they witness full congregations in the Mosques even on a working Friday, they’ll withdraw their opposition and will calm down.

The government, in a few months, will then get strong and brave enough to nullify the mistake made in 1977 and soon people will enjoy a full day of holiday every Sunday!

Sincerely:
