THE FOLLOWING LETTER IS PRESENTED FOR FAVOURABLE PUBLICATION:

SUB: CASH FOR HORSES

We keep on reading in the newspapers that such and such amount has been spent on horse-trading. These statements do not come from the so-called common man, the actual voter who brings in these horses. Rather, these statements emanate from the worthy leaders of this nation.

It has become a routine whenever the elections for any seat comes up or there is move for a vote of no-confidence. From present to past Prime Ministers, from sitting Senators to ex-MNAs, from Party leaders to Party sycophants, the accusations are always the same. Money has flowed like the proverbial river. Figures in millions are flaunted as if this country’s political parties are awash in hot moolah. The man on the street is dazzled with the shenanigans of the high and mighty.

Unfortunately, the accusers stop short of substantiating their accusations. No one has really come out with a clear-cut proof of who took what and from whom. Where was the money delivered? Who financed the amount? Was it deposited in Swiss Banks? Was it in US$ or in Japanese Yens? Was there a signed agreement? How many people were involved in the transactions? Was the "LOTA" willing to bargain away his/her soul completely with so many people knowing about his volte-face? How come no one, and we mean no one, especially the fourth estate, really digs into the actual scene?

It seems the citizens of The Islamic Republic of Pakistan either do not care, either do not want to know, or either they think that since everything else is deteriorating in this country, the political system should disintegrate too. For this they are depending on the politicians to hurry up and do the job. Maybe the denizens are waiting for the Messiah to come and are earnestly praying for deliverance. Maybe they are resigned to the fate that this political drama will continue like Agatha Christie’s play The Mousetrap which is going on continuously for the last forty four years in a theater in London !!!

Sincerely:

KADER K. KHERATI
