I Don't Understand

by Skye Haerrington

Ok, this poem was originally meant to have a different set up but I haven't learned enough html formatting yet to make it do what I want it to do. So, for now, it'll stay the way it is.

I don't understand how you can just leave
me here as though I were some useless possession
not worth whatever space I may take up inside
your suitcase.
I do not understand how you
can leave me in this world in favor of Heaven
when my paradise would become hell without
you there beside me.
I do not understand how
some vengeful diety an tear us from one
another as though we had committed some
terrible crime.
I don't understand why others
feel that I'd find comfort in knowing you
were watching me when my only true comfort
was being within your arms.
I do not understand
that not matter how many tears I cry, they
will never be enough to bring you back to me.

I do not understand how the rest of the world
can go on as though nothing has happened while
my entire universe has stopped.
Moreso than all
the rest, I will never understand that no matter
how hard I tried, there was nothing that I
could do to save you and, in turn, save myself.
