Rush Delivery, or Any Excuse To Send For The Messenger
by saabira
During his senior year in
high school, JC agreed to intern at his father's law firm for the summer. He
didn't really want to do it, because he was certain he'd be able to make music
for a living and he wouldn't *need* to know how to run the firm. But he didn't
want to disappoint his dad; and that's how he found himself in the waiting
area to his dad's office talking shit with his dad's secretary, Kevin.
It was in that waiting area that JC first saw the bike messenger. A beautiful
Puerto Rican boy with sparkling-brown eyes and dark curls matted to his head
from the heat and his helmet.
The messenger nodded at him, before dropping off a paper-wrapped parcel and
taking the three envelopes Kevin was handing him. He nodded at JC again as
turned to go. The whole exchange took less than half a minute; JC could've
blinked and missed it. The last thing he saw was the rainbow patch on the
messenger's bag as he breezed out the door.
JC's mouth was hanging open. And he heard Kevin trying to get his attention.
Kevin was smirking at him. "His name his Howie. And he'll say yes if you ask
him out."
JC was still dumbstruck. Kevin just smiled and answered the ringing phone.
At lunch, his dad's assistant, Joey, also had much to say about Howie. "He's
adorable, isn't he?" Joey grinned, as he speared more pasta salad.
JC blushed bright red.
"You should ask him out. He'll say yes."
"But he doesn't even know me," JC protested.
"Oh, honey, he'll remember you."
There weren't any emergency packages going out until the end of the week, and
JC had decided to take the advice of Kevin, Joey, and Christina, the
assistant-receptionist, and ask Howie to have lunch with him.
Howie smiled nicely at him as a bead of sweat dripped down the side of his
face, and JC prepared to be let down easy.
Instead he was pleasantly surprised when Howie suggested they have dinner on
Saturday instead, begging out of lunch because he was "gross from the heat".
JC agreed quickly, and he felt his face heat up as he wrote his phone number
on the back of one of his dad's business cards and handed it to Howie.
JC put up with a lot of teasing from Kevin and the rest of the support staff.
As he remembered the way Howie's eyes had shone with laughter, his beautiful
mouth curved in a smile, he suspected the teasing would all be worth it come
Saturday.
