The Majel Hat

By: Debbie B.

the mid-90s, majel started selling these wild sombrero hats at cons. hand decorated with pesos and gold trim and all sorts of dingly-dangly things. these hats were the ultimate in tacky cool.

when bjo trimble was contemplating re-releasing her book, on the good ship enterprise, she sent out a call to fandom for personal stories. i wrote a little thing called "the majel hat" about my exploits in the acquisition of one of these hats.

in the course of prepping for the book, bjo sent a copy of my essay to majel for approval. you could have knocked me over with a feather when, on May 11, 1995, I received a
letter from La Maje herself asking if she could give copies of my essay out to people who buy "majel hats!" as she put it, "the spirit of your letter is the perfect whimsical complement to my creations."

well, shut my mouth. of course i agreed! and i still carry that letter, tattered and beaten, around in my day-runner, to remind me of the time i made the maje-meister laugh!

coming soon--a
picture of the infamous majel hat and the complete text of the essay.
