What is the Maitland
Environmental Youth Council?
The Maitland
Environmental Youth Council (or Maitland EYC for short) is made up of young
people, aged between 12- 25 years, concerned about environmental issues.
The aims of Maitland EYC
are to:
- improve our local environment
- increase awareness and education on
environmental issues,
- present youth perspectives to adults
and decision makers;
- encourage young people to take action
& care for the environment, and
- have fUN whilst making a difference.
The Maitland EYC has
created the opportunity for young people to put forward their views on
environmental issues and turn talk in reality!
What do we do?
The achievements of the
Maitland Enviro Youth Council (Maitland EYC) show that their enthusiasm and
commitment to the environment is making a difference.
- Participation in local Landcare
projects has led to on-ground achievements including-
- bushland regeneration, habitat
creation and establishment of a bushfood education area,
- removal of Water Hyacinth from Morpeth
Common Wetland, and
- assistance in establishing thousands
of native tree, shrub and grass species across Maitland.
- Helping to organise the annual
Maitland Enviro Youth Forum which has attracted over 200 high school
students for three years running.
- Providing feedback to Maitland City
Council in respect to youth environmental concerns.
- Guest presentations to international
conferences, Youth Forums in other regions and Landcare & Environment
Forums.
- Planting trees at Maitland’s Skate
Park to provide shade and aesthetics for other young people.
- Work has just begun on a Community
Garden to be established by EYC and the wider community in East Maitland.
