"Chillicothe St." Floodwall Mural painting. Portsmouth (Ohio)
|
Mighty Ohio river. This river brings the life to all cities and
communities along his course, but sometimes terrific floods
were signal for great disaster and desolation.
Because of this many cities along the river build up
floodwalls in the first decades of the XX century, to protect
populations and homes.
Among them, some cities had the bright idea to decorate the
walls with mural paintings depicting scenes of the region.
Portsmouth, Steubenville . . We show a detail of the walls
of the city of Portsmouth, in Ohio. Artist Robert Dafford left
some urban scenes as this "Chillicothe Street".

South Shore Line railway
Look carefully at this old poster.
Railroad memorabilia with a geographic sense.
The South Shore Line was stablished at the beginnings of the
XX Century and served northwest Indiana region from South Bend
to Hammond, and then to the great city of Chicago by the Illinois
Central railroad.
A densely populated region (South Bend, Michigan City, LaPorte,
Burns Harbor, Valparaiso,Portage, Indiana Harbor, Gary,
Hammond) that commuted daily to Chicago.
And of course most Chicagoans used the South Shore Line to
visit some places of Northern Indiana as the Indiana Dunes.
In Porter County, the Indiana Dunes Lakeshore was a major
spot for vacation and beach afternoons.
A wide campaing by the South Shore Line promoted this region
with posters and brochures displayed at all stations and depots
of the region.
