New Zealand women look to the future Emergence of the New Zealand senior women's B by Shelly O'Dwyer, MCPA Publicity Officer. 15 March 2005 This year, New Zealand Canoe Polo takes a significant step towards ensuring a solid future for competitive women's polo with the development of a New Zealand senior women's B squad. New Zealand senior womens A coach Kirsten Demanser-Wilson says "the large pool of dedicated women players operating at the top level of canoe polo in New Zealand, and vying for a place in the senior women's team, has called for the development of a senior women's B squad." This development reflects the flow of women players progressing from youth squads and also senior women players regaining competitive form. A number of players in the senior womens squad are under 21 and the development of a New Zealand senior women's B enables the nurturing of future teams and a 'developmental pathway for potential New Zealand senior women A players. New Zealand Executive Director, Rosemary Wright indicates that the New Zealand senior women B players will benefit immensely from the opportunity to be coached by, and to play with, the top women squad members and to pick-up on their experience and motivation to succeed. Mainland is currently well represented in the New Zealand senior women's A, and the establishment of a B squad provides the opportunity for more of Mainlands developing women to access top level coaching and experience. Such opportunities included the 5 day senior women's training camp held in Christchurch over 5-9 January 2005. "The senior women's B had coaching (from Australia's Stephen Gibson, NZ's Kirsten Demanser-Wilson and Robyn Gibbard) and direction given to them in relation to training programmes, skill development, tactical knowledge as well as specific information on recovery, injuries and stretching," says Kirsten Demanser-Wislon. She believes the B squad is a sure step towards ensuring that the depth in New Zealand women's polo continues through to the Canoe Polo World Championships in the Netherlands 2006 and beyond.
