Mainland makes a splash at the 2004 New Zealand Canoe Polo Awards by Shelley O'Dwyer, MCPA Publicity Officer 23 November 2004 Nick Burnett and Sean Thompson were recognised as New Zealand Canoe Polo's Most Valued Coach and Most Valued Referee respectively at this year's New Zealand Canoe Polo awards. New Zealand Canoe Polo announced the winners of the annual awards during the closing ceremony of the 2004 Inter Regional Championships in September 2004.
Nick Burnett has gained a significant reputation as coach of the 2003 and 2004 NZ Senior Men and has been appointed to this position for 2005. He has also successfully coached Palmerston North's Vikings and Christchurch's Justice to National League gold medals and was instrumental in seeing the Central Region take out the Inter Regional Senior Men�s title. Sean Thompson received the award of Most Valued Referee for the second time, first holding the title in 2003. After completing the task of squad referee at the 2004 Canoe Polo World Championships in Miyoshi, Sean has accepted the position of New Zealand Canoe Polo Refereeing Director and will be well placed to bring both his ICF qualifications and NZ regional refereeing experience to play in this role. The Canoe Polo Medal was presented to Central's Phil Parry in recognition of his outstanding and long term commitment to all facets of canoe polo - local and regional administration, regional and national governance, as coach and advocate for the development of canoe polo at the school level, and as New Zealand coach and selector. Nominations for 2005 Nominations for the 2005 awards will be called for in March/April next year.
