| DO NOT do your puppy the disservice of allowing him freedom in your "den" until he has had a success outside. He will learn nothing from the mistake if you make it easy for him. Additionally, it bears saying that the punishment should be the same whether it is your fault or not. Consistent is consistent. If it is your fault your dog went to the bathroom in your house because you did not take him out, then he is being punished for YOUR failure....yup...swallow that. Remeber that praise should happen when he is successful again. There are people who would follow the "OUT" with a firm spanking. I do not do this. I do not make a moral judgement on this...that is just not my style. I do not recommend it. If you are doing what you are supposed to do, there should be no need anyway. Enough said there. Remember that your dog will be part of your family for a long time...he may guard your home, belongings, children. He may be your daughter's best friend or play with the neighboorhood kids. It is important for him to be of the best character possible. It is also important for him to be trustworthy in your house...in every room. He should not have to live a life confined to the basement or pen because he will "trash" the house when you are not there. Do the work...you will be glad you did, and so will he. have the love for him to see to his needs ALL THE TIME and to discipline him CONSISTENTLY or rethink the dog buying experience. |
