In order to complete the research and writing of the books, it is estimated that at least two full year�s work remains. Families and descendants have to be interviewed, many years of microfilmed newspapers need to be read, etc. Several modern miners have agreed to write about their recent mining experiences and provide their story as a chapter to complement the appropriate book. Many might be interested in knowing something of the work of the writer. The author is from Skowhegan, Maine and graduated from the Universirty of Maine at Orono and earned an advanced degree at SUNY at Buffalo, NY. The writer has authored, co-authored, or edited 15 books concerning mineralogy including Dana�s System of Mineralogy, the standard reference work on mineralogy in English, and the recently released Minerals and their Localities, as well as the two volume Mineralogy of Maine. The writer has authored or co-authored over 200 articles on mineralogy and has given over 300 lectures in 22 states as well as in Canada and England. The writer has been a consulting editor for Rocks and Minerals magazine and for Matrix magazine and served as an editor for volumes 4 and 5 of the Handbook of Mineralogy. Over the years, the writer has been an officer in many organizations, several with national and international significance: Friends of Mineralogy � National Chapter, Canadian Micromineralogists Association, Rochester Academy of Science and its Mineral Symposium, Oxford County Mineral and Gem Association, Geoliterary Society, University of Maine Geological Society, State University of New York Geological Society, etc. and member of Mineralogical Society of America, Mineralogical Association of Canada, Franklin-Ogdensburg Mineralogical Society, Wayne County Gem and Mineral Association, etc. Teaching and Public Service awards have been received from the American Federation of Gem and Mineral Societies, Eastern Federation of Gem and Mineral Societies, Wild Acres Association, and the Rochester Academy of Science.
